VISITING THE JOHNSTON COLLECTION
A HOUSE MUSEUM OF FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS
The Johnston Collection is the legacy of William Johnston, an antique dealer and collector. He left his estate to the people of Victoria for their education and enjoyment. The collection ranges from the 17th to the 19th century and has great strengths in Georgian, Regency and Louis XV furniture, Empire and decorative arts.
A booking is essential to visit the collection.
The Johnston Collection runs three tours daily from Monday to Friday at 10.00am, 12.00noon and 2.15pm.
Please contact us to make a booking.
TO PROTECT THE PRIVACY AND PARKING RIGHTS OF MR JOHNSTON’S RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBOURS, WE ARE NOT PERMITTED BY OUR PLANNING PERMIT TO PUBLISH THE ADDRESS OF THE MUSEUM.
On the day of the appointed visit, visitors will be collected from the foyer, near the Yarra Room of the Hilton on the Park Hotel (Wellington Parade, near the Fitzroy Gardens). Visitors are brought to the Johnston Collection in a minibus operated by our staff. This arrangement is due to planning permit stipulations but adds a little intrigue to your visit that we hope you enjoy.
All tickets are prepaid and coffee and biscuits or shortbread are served to guests on arrival. From the time of collection to the time of return to the Hilton your tour will take approximately one and a half hours. Tours are scheduled three times a day and occasional Saturday morning and evening tours. (12 Saturday morning tours per year or 25 evenings – After hours openings are limited by our planning permit).
Our tours are guided with only eight people assigned to each guide. Groups of 16 share the introductory welcome and coffee and will then be divided into two for the tour through the house.
Due to our insurance and the nature of the tours we are unable to admit children under the age of 8 years.
